A false ceiling can make a small living room feel taller and more open – or lower and heavier if planned badly. These ideas work well in compact flats.

1. Peripheral (border) ceiling
A drop only around the edges keeps the centre of the room at full height. It hides wiring and holds spotlights without lowering the whole room.
2. Cove lighting
Hidden strip lights in a recessed edge wash light across the ceiling, making it feel higher and the room calmer.
3. Keep it simple and light
Avoid deep, multi-layer designs in small rooms. White or light ceilings reflect light and add a sense of space.
4. Define zones
In a living-dining room, a ceiling detail above the dining table separates the two areas without walls.

5. Plan with the fan and AC
Fix fan, AC and light positions before the ceiling is built so nothing looks out of place.
Low ceiling? Consider this
- Choose a peripheral design instead of a full drop
- Use slim recessed lights rather than hanging fixtures
- Run curtains from the ceiling to the floor to draw the eye up
